Happy 120th Birthday Pine Lodge!
Did you know you have a mansion?
Nestled in Sugar Pine Point, Pine Lodge is a historic gem that transports us to a lavish time. Acquired by San Francisco businessman I. W. Hellman in 1897, the estate's transformation from sand hill to opulent summer retreat is awe-inspiring. Completed in 1903, Pine Lodge was a marvel, boasting modern amenities like electric lights and plumbing.
Owned by Florence Hellman Ehrman after I.W.’s passing, the estate buzzed with activities – hiking, fishing, and tennis, among others. The lodge, surrounded by outlying structures like boathouses and cabins, offered comfort and grandeur. The living room's fireplaces provided warmth, and the dining room, with intricate hand-woven paneling, exuded elegance.
In 1965, Pine Lodge joined California State Park System. Today, visitors step into history, witnessing the legacy of luxurious Lake Tahoe summer homes by resting on the front porch patio furniture admiring the lake view, and touring the inside with a knowledgeable SSPF docent.
On August 12th, the Sierra State Parks Foundation co-hosted a birthday celebration with CA State Parks. Attendees got a blast from the past with historic cars and fashions of the era, free tours sponsored by SSPF, and a birthday cake-cutting! SSPF has spearheaded many initiatives to share the landmark’s rich history with visitors including repairing the front porch, accurately restoring the garden to its prime, and upkeep of the mansion’s exterior, interior, and surrounding facilities. With its rich history and timeless allure, Pine Lodge continues to captivate and will inspire for generations to come.
